My Year at Mrs Smith’s takes the form of a detailed memoir written by nineteen-year-old Amanda Mentmore. As with all Clemency Jopling’s work, this book is explicit erotic fiction, intended for adult readers only. It contains descriptions of sexual encounters, both M/F and F/F. More specifically, the book includes numerous accounts of bdsm, spanking, caning, and other forms of corporal punishment. In Part 1, Amanda relates how, in 1875, she fell out with her stepmother, at a time when Amanda’s father was absent on a long business trip abroad. As a punishment, Amanda was promptly despatched to Mrs Smith’s Academy for Young Ladies. This small establishment specialised in the reform of young women from wealthy homes – girls who had become idle, insolent, disobedient, and generally likely to bring disgrace upon their family name. Why, some of them had already surrendered their virginity! Mrs Smith, however, had the answer to these behaviour problems. She applied discipline of the strictest kind. Not to put too fine a point on it, the girls who did not meet Mrs Smith’s high standards of behaviour were required to strip naked; they were then bound to a pine table, hand and foot, and beaten with a cane. Amanda Mentmore’s description of these punishments should not be read by those of a sensitive and nervous disposition. Amanda’s memoir is in two parts, and together they cover the events of a whole year. This first part runs to 38,000 words. The second instalment, My Year at Smith’s, Part 2: Revenge, is also available on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback formats.
